Poetry Reading at Vi Gallery
Saturday, Dec. 15, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Vi Gallery, Embarcadero Center 4, Lobby (Second) Level, 100 Drumm St., San
Francisco
Richard Hack and Mel C. Thompson, writers and publishers, two mainstays of
the thriving San Francisco poetry scene. Both of these excellent public readers
have organized numerous literary events that have fertilized and promoted
grassroots cultural production in one of the world’s most creative regions.
Richard Hack founded and edited Oxygen, one of the city’s longest-running
literary magazines (21 issues from 1991 to 2002). He is a widely published poet,
fiction writer, opinion writer, and reviewer of books and movies. He formerly edited
Chicago Review and other little magazines.
Mel C. Thompson has published some 26 volumes of his poetry, fiction, songs,
and commentary. He was a prominent spoken-word performer and publisher in
the 1990s and continues to present his fascinating writing on a wide range of
topics as well as humorous performance art. He was also the editor of CitiVoice,
Blue Beetle Press, and other publishing imprints.
Vi Gallery was named Best Women’s Boutique in the 2011 Best of the Bay voting.
It purveys a huge array of scarves, other women’s accessories, and handicrafts
from Vietnam and the Bay Area, including colorful wooden dragonflies. The
owner, Cammy La, is an amateur writer.
